D&D for Obama!!!

http://boingboing.net/2008/08/19/mccain-staffer-slams.html

Because *apparently*, everyone who plays D&D supports Obama, because we're all basement-dwelling degenerates.

Fortunately, some people who actually have the clout might point out the flaws at the heart of that argument. http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4news/20080828

That's one of the fundamental problems with the McCain campaign--they're old fashioned. They don't keep track of how society evolves.

Anyone who was at PAX this weekend knows that gamers are just everyone. And actually, in many respects, gamers are the COOL people--whether those cool people wield guns or not.

Cheers

(Anonymous): D&D for Obama!!!

The stereotype of DnD players, or any one in to scifi/fantasy, is viewed very pale skinny or fat pimply guys who are inept socially, especially with women. This stereotype is constantly portrayed in mainstream in TV and Film. I've encountered a handful of these DnD nerds, dorks, geeks etc., and I have been one of said stereotype for several years.

When I read up on those links you provided, the word retro was mentioned and I imediately remembered the 1980's film Monsters & Mazes starring Tom Hanks. A film based on a book written by an author that poorly (if it all) researched Dungeons & Dragons and whats it about. Dungeons & Dragons is accurately described in that Wizards link which responds to the McCain party Member's blog comment. I also like the reference made of donating gaming products to our soldiers in Iraq. Soldiers that McCain supports.

After reading the original quote, I was pretty much of the "meh" reaction. It wasn't so much a blow at RPG players, but that the NY Times editors are those types of blogger nerds. Who do exist and are very annoying, so he's actually pretty accurate along the lines of his insult, just that it was probably out of line for him to say that about the editors.

I thought I would have to allow issues like alternative energy, environment, and immigration be the determination of whom I support...

BUT NO ONE TAKES SHOTS AT D&D!!!!!

Yup, I'm going to vote for Obama now. It'll be such a time-saver now that I won't have to watch the debates.

I'm glad you posted about this. I thought the WotC response was very well crafted. I know several gamers who are either military or former military--but the weight of a current soldier D&D player in WotC's letter is much heavier than my second hand knowledge!

Kudos to them for their graceful response.
